Iceland - Reykjavík City Museum - Árbæjarsafn Árbæjarsafn is Reykjavík's folk museum, and the largest open-air museum in Iceland, established in 1957. It comprises about 30 buildings, most of them brought to the museum site from downtown Reykjavík, while the Árbær farmhouse still stands in its original location. The buildings date from the period 1820-1920. The aim of the museum is to give the public an idea of icelandic architecture and the lifestyle of the past. Inside the houses various exhbitions and reconstructions of homes and workshops may be seen. Refreshments are served in the Dillon House. Events are scheduled every Sunday, and accordion music is played. Craftspeople demonstrate traditional tasks almost every day in the museum. Friday afternoons: free admission. Vegetable market. For children: Toys from olden times. Animals at pasture. Milking at 4.30 pm every day. Games every Saturday at 2 pm. Children's horse rides on Saturdays. In June, July and August the museum is open daily 10 am to 5 pm. Guided tours at 11 am and 2 pm. You can find more under: www.reykjavikmuseum.is
